Workshop 17 - Mindfulness in Nature for MHAW

Being in nature for around 20mins or more can significantly lower the levels of stress hormones in the body, which in itself is a great reason for getting outside more often.  In addition to that, plants give off phytochemicals that stimulate our killers cells and a research study showed that ill people who could recuperate near a window recovered quicker than those who were not able to look out onto nature.  So, being in nature is great for our mental and physical health, reducing our stress levels and boosting our immune system.  Often though, we are outside, the eyes are open and the body is moving but we are consumed by thoughts in the mind and do not see beyond them. We need to bring a quality of attention to our experience to truly engage with it, to be really present and drink it all in. That quality of attention, is mindfulness, when we pay attention to what we are being mindful rather than mindless. Connecting in this way when out in nature also helps to provide more clarity of mind to perhaps take a different perspective about things or think in a more creative way. Connecting with nature brings the realisation that we are all part of something bigger than ourselves and when we do that maybe our problems may not not seem quite so instense as we first thought.  Why not get outside now or sit by a window to listen to this guided practice and connect a little deeper with nature.
